Chapter Nineteen

“Hi, I’m calling to speak with someone about a Paul Marco,” Emily said into the iPhone she held in her hand, pressed to her ear. “I understand he served with the church not too long ago.”

“And you are?” the woman on the other end of the line asked.

“My name is Stephanie Carmichael. Paul Marco is serving at the church I attend, and we’re looking to share more information about him with the congregation,” Emily said.

She rocked in the chair with her notepad in her lap and pen clipped to several pages. The prior conversation she’d had with the university where the demon had attended to get his theology degree had given her no information except the date he graduated. Emily hoped she learned more from her current call.

“Oh, I see,” the woman on the other end of the line said. “Yes, he served with our church for nearly a year. Has he been ordained yet? I know he was taking classes.”

“He graduated last May. From what he’s told us, he will be ordained in the next few months.”

“Well, now, good for him. He was wonderful when he served here. I’m sure he’ll continue to serve the Lord in his new church.”

Emily rolled her eyes. If only people knew he was a demon then they wouldn’t think such nice things about him. “Can you tell me about his achievements?”

“Well, he cared a lot about boys in the poor neighborhoods. He tried to teach them about our heavenly Father and keep them from getting into trouble. He even started a club for boys in one neighborhood. They couldn’t speak English well, so he helped teach them. He really cared about all the kids who belonged to our church. Whenever a boy would go missing, he tried to rally the community to help locate the child. Unfortunately, so many innocent ones are taken from us too soon.”

“Was there a lot of kids that went missing?”

“Well, this is a big city and so many of the foreign families aren’t familiar with types of crimes. I think they don’t know how to protect the little ones well enough. So it’s not uncommon for a boy to go missing.”

“Were any of the boys found from his efforts?”

“Unfortunately, no. He had to leave it to the police to handle. There are just too many that are taken away. It’s quite sad.”

Disturbed by the woman’s words, Emily paused rocking. Boston had a huge population, but if foreign boys turned up missing on a regular basis, surely the cops would notice a problem. She hoped.

“And Paul helped search for these missing boys?” Emily asked.

“Yes, and he’d offer comfort to the families.”

“Did anyone ever complain about him?”

“What? No. He was a good man. He loved the Lord and he loved helping children.”

“So nobody ever said anything bad about him or raised questions?”

“No.”

“Did anyone suspect him of any wrong doing?”

“No.” She scoffed. “And I don’t care for your question. I’ve told you enough about him already. Now I have work to do.
